If you’ve had to scan your passport on a long-haul flight, you’ve probably used these. Chances are you got them at the last minute from the local chemist outlet store? You chose a size that fitted your shoe size or, if you came really well-prepared, you had your calf and ankle circumferences on hand. And then you grimaced as you put these on before you boarded the plane, struggling to imagine surviving the irritation for that long flight!

As with all classes of compression stockings, getting the right size for you, together with the design you need to get the job done, is crucial. The world of compression stockings can be hard to navigate, so that is why the team at Koru Orthotics want to help you.

Wearing an incorrect class and size could result in bigger issues for you than the condition you wanted to treat with the stockings in the first place!

Why use compression stockings?

Compression stockings are used to improve circulation in the legs, aiding the venous system by improving blood flow back to the heart. When the circulatory system is not functioning normally due to a specific condition, or during a prolonged period of inactivity, it can result in swollen legs and ankles, discomfort and blood clots. Compression stockings help to alleviate the discomfort and swelling, and because it improves circulation, it reduces the likelihood of blood clot formation.

How do I know which stockings I need?

If you think you need compression stockings, it is always best to consult a health professional first. Depending on any underlying conditions, it will determine what you can and can’t use. Below is a general guide for the different classes of stockings available.
